My school life: Santa Montefiore
Santa Montefiore, the author and mum of two shares fond memories of her time at school, and reveals how it shaped her career
What was school life like for you"
I absolutely adored my time at Hanford School in Dorset, which was my boarding school from the age of eight to 12. It was an enchanted wonderland for children, based around a creaky old Jacobean mansion that could have been straight out of Harry Potter. I learnt the art of storytelling there.
What subject did you enjoy the most"
I loved English. I had an eccentric teacher called Mr Pole who encouraged and inspired me. Outside the classroom, I was also very good at climbing trees. There was a giant cedar tree in the garden which we were allowed to play on.
What?s your earliest school memory"
Being in a dormitory with 10 other girls! It was so much fun. We never stopped talking, dancing, playing and mucking about…
Did you always want to be an author"
I always wanted to write, and as a child I wrote stories non-stop. But never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be published and have my books displayed in shop windows.

How did you feel about going to an all-girls school"
I had an older brother who used to bring his friends home on weekends, and I had lots of male friends at home, so I enjoyed an all-girl environment at school. I went to Sherborne School for Girls after Hanford, which had the boys? school next door.
What was the best thing about boarding"...
