Ones to watch – upcoming sports stars
We catch up with the sports stars of the independent school sector.Â
1. Gabriel Adams, 12
GB Snowboarder
Shrewsbury High Prep School, Shropshire
Gabriel Adams came 12th in the U16 age group in the World Rookie Finals in Austria, in April. His passion for snowboarding began when his family were living in France, where he was going off huge kickers (jumps) in the adult park when he was just eight years old. He was spotted by Team GB junior coach Steve Addicott and has been training with him for the past three years, spending the winter season in Pila, Italy. At the British Ski and Snowboarding Championships 2015 Gabriel won Gold in the Junior Men?s Halfpipe and Junior Men?s Snowboardcross.
2. Lara MacColl, 11
England U13 Race Walking Champion
Sheffield High School, South Yorkshire
Year Seven pupil, Lara MacColl, won the U13 2km International Race Walking competition while representing England in the Nihill Shield (after the British Olympic medallist) in the walking race in Dartford, Kent. After starting race walking in Year Five and gaining the motivation from early success in the Sheffield Federation for School Sport (SFSS) competitions, Lara went on to win this international race with a time of 11:51 minutes. Lara recently led fellow pupils and staff in a fundraising walk for the global children?s charity PLAN.
