Throughout my 18 years as a Prep School Headmaster, I frequently hear the suggestion that parents should save their money for their child?s secondary education. But as a father of three children who have all been independently-educated from the age of three, I strongly believe that investing in your child?s education early is a much wiser use of your money.

Pre-Prep education usually covers children aged three-to-seven years, but most independent schools vary as to when they admit pupils. Some, like my current school ? Kingsley School in Bideford ? have a nursery that enrols children from as young as three months. My last school, however, admitted children from the age of three into a pre-reception class. Talking to friends to find out which schools they send their children to, or arranging a visit to the school itself, is a good way to get started. Many schools run open days, so you can get a good feel for the school and what it offers.
