Protect your child from asthma over the summer holidays
Take action now, and you could protect your little one from a potentially fatal attack come SeptemberÂ
This summer, Asthma UK is launching a campaign to help reduce the number of children at risk of having a potentially fatal asthma attack when they go back to school, after research shows that kids are three times more likely to be admitted to hospital because of an attack in September than in August.
The charity says parents can protect their child against asthma attacks by maintaining their usual preventer medicine routine over the summer holidays and using an up-to-date written action plan.
Data has shown that children aged 14 and under are almost three times more likely to be admitted to hospital because of an asthma attack in September than in August, mostly due to seasonal triggers such as cold and flu viruses. “The good news is that by taking a few simple steps over the summer holiday, parents can keep their children as healthy as possible and reduce the risk of this happening,” says Sonia Munde, head of helpline and nurse manager at Asthma UK.
“The best way to help your child cope with asthma triggers over the summer and when they go back to school is for them to continue taking their medication as prescribed. It’s easy for routines to go out of the window over the summer, so this could be as simple as making sure any other carers know when and how your child should be taking their preventer medicine,” she adds.
