Sailing is all about teamwork, communication, and the ability to make decisions ? these are some of the key reasons why independent schools recognise the benefits of this popular sport. As well as a great leveller, sailing is an open sport, and one of the few where it is possible to be on a par with Olympic champions and world-class professional sailors at regattas, such as Cowes Week, and even beating them!
While Team GB?s Olympic status as one of the most successful, in terms of medals, has helped sailing to gain recognition in recent years, the success of British sailing goes far beyond that. It is the training and exam structure, governed by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) to allow measureable progress, that has helped GB to lead the way globally. With such a proven structure in place through its governing body, and the Independent Schools Association?s (ISA) Inspire to Aspire initiative to create opportunities for pupils in the wake of Team GB?s Olympic success at Rio, it?s not surprising that more and more independent schools have taken the “plunge”.
