School memories with the Eden Project co-founder Sir Tim Smit
We take a trip down memory lane and speak to the Dutch-born British businessman, famous for his work on the Lost Gardens of Heligan, the Eden Project, and the Charlestown Shipwreck & Treasure Centre, all in Cornwall, England
Highly regarded for his work on The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project, where part of the recent G7 summit was held, Sir Tim Smit reflects on his early years at Vinehall School, East Sussex
Your school in three words
Magical, frightening, inspiring.
What did you want to be when you grew up"
An explorer, but became an archaeologist instead.
Your favourite teacher"
Tom Gilbart, a Cornishman with skin like bronzed hide, a handlebar moustache, eyes that flashed and a voice that transported all of us children when he read Brigadier Gerard, King?s Solomon?s Mines and various Sherlock Holmes stories. He loved wildlife and history and turned all of us into natural historians. He taught us that leadership was as much about authority as creating a personality no one wanted to disappoint. He was tough and his influence lingers to this day, with my interests being polymathic and my refusal to see even a fracture line between culture and science. He was a Renaissance man. Also, when he was overseeing us at dinner several nights a week, he would slowly peel an onion, and while surveying the hall for reactions, eat it layer by layer. Isn?t it funny what memories stick with you" Favourite place to hang out"
Crawling under the Dyerballs...
