Sherborne Girls School, Dorset: Behind the Scenes

For a boarding school, like Sherborne Girls, to be a happy and productive place it needs to be a home away from home, and that takes dedicated and caring staff
Sherborne Girls in Dorset is thriving, with 440 of its 470 pupils as full boarders in one of its seven boarding houses. It takes a lot to look after so many busy teenagers, so we spoke to some of the adults who help run the houses and look after the wellbeing of the girls in their care.
House staff
Each house has its resident staff from house parents and assistants to matrons and tutors. ?We are available from early in the morning until late in the evening,? says Housemistress Fran Barnes. ?When the girls first arrive, we keep them busy and they soon get used to living here. They know where our rooms are, so if they need us they can find us. Living in a house is like living in one big happy family. It is always fun and very rarely predictable.? Catering
It is really important to make sure that the food is healthy and nutritious and will provide fuel for the busy school days. At Sherborne each boarding house has its own kitchen and dining room, and eating together gives a real sense of community. Head chef, Simon Merton, says, ?You have to think of it as feeding a big family, and remember that the girls are a long way from home. Food is a major thing and we work hard to offer healthy and nutritious food but also meals the girls enjoy.?
