St Paul’s Girls’ School: How This London School Won the Green Award for Environmental Achievement 2021
St Paul’s Girls’ School, located in Hammersmith, London, won the Green Award for Environmental Achievement at our Independent School of the Year awards 2021. Here?s how they came out on top out of over 700 entrants.
Taking environmental responsibility has long been central to the lives of many students at St Paul’s Girls’ School (SPGS), as shown by numerous alumnae working in this field, including Kate Raworth (pioneer of ‘doughnut economics’) and Rebecca Henderson (Harvard professor of environmental economics).

Over the past few years, however, addressing the climate and biodiversity crises has become mainstream at St Paul’s Girls’ School. There has been an explosion in applications to be on the St Paul’s Environmental Action Committee (SPEAC), which is now one of the most oversubscribed and active school societies involving students from Year 7 to 13, supported by a Staff Eco-Forum representing all departments and school functions. Year 12 SPEAC members lead termly whole school assemblies while younger reps also regularly run year assemblies. Weekly student-led activities include an Eco Discussion Group open to other schools, a Junior Eco Club, eco tips displayed on digital screens and a bulletin packed with articles, games and recipes.
