Talking business with Joanna Jensen of Childs Farm
The mother of two reveals the inspiration behind her children’s toiletries brand
Why did you set up Childs Farm"
I wanted something for my children that I simply couldn?t find: gentle toiletries suitable for sensitive and eczema-prone skin but which actually do the job of cleaning and detangling well. I created the products using my own preferences, from the fragrance to avoiding parabens, assuming others would want the same things as me. Looking back, certainly in light of the amount of research we now do, I?m amused by my rather arrogant assumption! But it worked. We supplied John Lewis and Ocado initially, and had the support of independent stockists, and hotels such as Chewton Glen and The Dorchester. The business grew steadily, culminating in a launch with Boots and Waitrose in June 2014. What sparked your interest in skincare"
I?ve suffered from sensitive skin all my life; I?m very pale with freckles, and as a child I would fry at the first sign of sun. I also had atopic eczema, so reacted badly to many mainstream products. Childs Farm was created for me and my family, so we could wash without irritation! I?m just so grateful it worked for other people, too.
Describe a typical day for you.
The alarm goes off at 6.45am. My children ? Bella, eight, and Mimi, 10, ? are fairly self-sufficient so while I?m showering, they are getting dressed and eating breakfast. I then sit down with a cup of tea and check my emails before heading over to the office at 8....
