Talking Heads: Homesickness
Five Headteachers explain how parents can help to ease homesickness if their child has started boarding this month
Simon Smith
Rydal Penrhos School, Colwyn Bay
Feeling homesick is perfectly natural, but before the new term starts, you could send the boarding staff mementos, such as family photos, so they prepare your child?s room and give it a homely, familiar feel before they move in.
I would recommend checking the school?s website for boarding house updates, where you will see the many exciting events taking place. Send messages asking your child if they enjoyed X or Y, rather than focusing on what they might be missing back at home. You will soon come to realise that no news is good news, as your child is too busy enjoying their boarding school life!
Tracy Kirnig
Prior’s Field School, Goldaming
Preparation and open communication are key to helping ensure homesickness doesn?t cloud the fun that can be had when boarding. We send out a pack of essential tips to families, ranging from the easiest way to make your bed, to resolving more serious problems together.
We suggest parents approach boarding with confidence, and discuss any worries with house staff, but also encourage their child to talk to their houseparents themselves. An exciting evening activity programme and good routines are also helpful in providing opportunities for new boarders to meet, bond and stay happy.
