Talking Heads: Moving to Senior School
We ask six leading headteachers their top tips for taking the leap to senior school this autumn
Headmaster of Loretto School, East Lothian
Dr Graham Hawley, Loretto School, East Lothian
It?s entirely normal to feel nervous so don?t worry about this. Do your best to smile, however you are feeling. We all look friendlier when we smile and it is infectious. Starting a new school gives you a fresh start; you can be who you want to be. Create good habits from the first day; complete your homework and spend a few minutes on personal organisation, eg filing any notes. Develop a reputation as a risk taker ? not with your personal safety, but as someone who is prepared to step out of their comfort zone. Risk taking might be as simple as putting your hand up to answer a question. Be that someone who is always prepared to have a go.

Moving to senior school can be a time of mixed emotions, for both you and your child. They will be one of the younger ones working their way up in a much bigger environment; everything will be different. Instead of having one or two teachers, they will have many new ones. It will be a steep learning curve! ?Fitting in? for them will be the priority. When they ask for advice, don?t tell them what to do, talk through what they might do. Give them ownership of the solution to the problem....
