The Benefits of Developing a Hobby
Ross Urquhart explains how developing a hobby or interest can benefit a child’s education
Time spent on recreation is extremely important. These days there is an incredibly diverse range of activities to choose from, and as I ponder my own passions and interests, I recognise that many of these were once influenced by those that taught me, and in turn how they have influenced the many students I teach now.
Sometimes it feels almost impossible to curb your enthusiasm for something you find genuinely interesting, and in the past I have witnessed many colleagues ?come to life? when teaching their students a subject that clearly inspires them. Children are equally very good at responding to enthusiasm; even a subject they consider their least favourite may become inspiring if taught with passion, pace and energy.

Some hobbies have social appeal, and certain pupils are drawn to vocations that promote the chance to meet new people. Others prefer activities in which they can be independent, and allow space to focus and time to concentrate. Nonetheless, regardless of the hobby, there is always the opportunity to talk with people who are equally passionate.
