Burgess Hill Girls Junior School, West Sussex
Women are typically under-represented in science and technology careers, but gender is no bar to a STEM career at Burgess Hill Girls Junior School. To celebrate British Science Week, school teamed up with global engineering company, Ricardo, to deliver a fascinating workshop in which pupils assembled electromagnetic motors.
The school’s ongoing relationship with Ricardo was established a year ago, and the workshop was run by six Ricardo graduate engineers, who taught the children how to use electromagnets as a source of renewable energy. For the remainder of British Science Week, the Year Two students ran a special assembly called “You Can Try This At Home!”. The children demonstrated experiments to other year groups and parents, including ten-minute ice cream, Skittle rainbows (dissolving Skittle sweets to make a rainbow), and Mento and Coca Cola explosions!
