Grouping pupils into sets based on ability is less common in Prep Schools, but I believe that it can work and bring about positive results, too. After all, teaching pupils of a similar academic level is much more straightforward, and potentially more productive, than leading a group with a wide variation of abilities.Â
However, with younger pupils in particular, we must be wary of embedding a perception that these children only belong in lower academic groups (the ?dumb set? mentality). After all, a negative cycle of low expectation and disengagement can emanate, especially if this perception is allowed to grow. How should it work"
I would suggest that ?formal? setting be avoided below Year Five. Using grouping tables and techniques to differentiate work allows AGT (Able, Gifted & Talented) pupils to be challenged and thrive, while allowing for support to be directed to where it is really needed. Operating out-of-lesson time for small enrichment groups at both ends of the ability spectrum can also provide the scaffolding required at this age.
