Stephanie Bagnall leapfrogged from a life with a family of travelling showpeople, to gaining a bursary to attend Wycliffe College, Gloucestershire
Stephanie Bagnall from Stonehouse in Gloucestershire, was, until very recently, a pupil at Wycliffe Sixth Form and is the first in her family to go to university.
For generations the family has worked as showpeople, travelling the country to run fairs ? but Stephanie chose a different path and set her sights on university. This autumn she will start at Royal Holloway University, London, to read English and theatre studies.
Stephanie?s childhood was not your typical independent school one. She spent most of her life, until a couple of years ago, living in a caravan and travelling. Her mum, though, always made sure she went to school. Stephanie helping her mum at the fairground
In order for Stephanie and her brother to follow their dream of achieving further education, her mum, Caroline, opened her own coffee shop ? Wynne?s Coffee Co ? in Stonehouse. Stephanie was studying at Maidenhill School, a comprehensive in Stonehouse, but set her sights on going to an independent school for the Sixth Form because she felt it would give her a better chance of winning a place at university.
Thanks to the Wycliffe bursary scheme, Stephanie joined the sixth form. She admits that at first she was worried about fitting in at the school. ?The travelling community is very tight-knit, so when you leave it you feel you don?t know how to talk to peopl...
