University Is Not The Only Option
University degrees are often seen as the only accolade, but this approach is limiting to students, says Tim Firth, Headteacher of Wrekin College, Shropshire
I constantly tell our pupils to push for “the best version” of themselves, to aim high and exceed their own expectations. But after years of dealing with HMC schools, where a university degree is seen as the ultimate accolade of success, and all too often the only accolade, I believe that very attitude is limiting to youngsters and their ambitions, even those that are more studious than most.
Facing reality
In the constant push for exceptional exam results, I feel we have neglected to see that even the top schools in the country also have a duty to teach real-life skills, and show that there are other options other than a purely academic route. And this is something that’s now become even more crucial, as tuition fees continue to soar and we face a jobs market that’s constantly changing. teaching pupils real-life skills needs to happen much earlier in education than previously
While we should continue to support those students working towards university, we also have a duty to support other students looking for alternative routes in further education. We can’t bury our heads in the sand, and ignore concerns from industry leaders that claim graduates from the so-called “snowflake generation” are not fit for work and lacking in key skills, such as resilience and a can-do attitude....
