The Avenue Pre-Prep & Nursery School in Highgate, North London has a motto engraved on its gates: ?Anima mea Cantabit.? This translates: ?My soul will sing.? Principal Mary Fysh founded the school in 1977 in her own home ?to educate her two young children, and a handful of others ? with the belief that ?if a child is made to feel inwardly secure, safe and happy in a friendly, nurturing, stable school environment, a love of learning will follow?.Â
And so it has proved. The London school ? ?a home from home, where children are listened to, encouraged and made to feel they matter? ? has now expanded to a larger site nearby, and is thriving, despite the ravages of Covid. Reports show that early-years-aged children have experienced serious setbacks to speech and language development, social skills and overall confidence as a result of lockdowns, school closures and confusing social distancing. The provision of nurturing environments for little learners to find their feet is, thus, more important than ever now. In the first lockdown, for months, busy working parents were left struggling to play the role of teacher.
