Calling for politics to be kept out of education during an election campaign might make some observers question my sanity, but I?ve never been more serious.
Swapping blows over tax changes to independent school fees is not what the educational future of our children is about. Labour?s pledge to charge VAT on school fees is a devastating blow for many parents – and schools. But if Sir Keir Starmer is the next PM I want to work with him on improving education for all children. I became a teacher to talk about children and learning, not politics and tax policy.Â
As Headteacher of Sir Keir?s old school, we are proud of his success. His career, like those of so many other outstanding individuals, demonstrates that education changes lives. A new government will be ambitious, and the independent sector has so much to offer in key areas of the impressive Labour Party Mission for Education, launched last year, from inclusion to SEND, from accountability reform to financial incentives to retain teachers, and making schools of all sectors a community hub. I think everyone would support Labour?s affirmation of the vocational and creative curriculum. The arts can reach and develop the best of our humanity while design and creativity offer huge economic value to UK plc. The focus on public speaking and debating skills is also to be applauded. I...
