 For a child of any age, starting a new school is a nerve-racking experience. Here, five experts from some of the UK’s top private schools share their advice on how to help a child settle in at a new school.Â

“Starting something new is a little scary. Anticipate any worries and talk through different situations with your child, like getting lost or finding the bathroom. They will, of course, have a buddy to guide them, but help them practise asking. Role play can really help assuage concerns. “Social acceptance is key. Are there students already there who could speak to your child and help reassure or ask when their ?buddies? will get in touch" Your child will want to take in all their new kit and they really don?t have to. Their first PE lesson, for example, will be used to sort out which lessons are for what, so no need for bulging bags.
“Make sure everything’s named and don?t send in anything expensive; they need to focus on settling in. Let them know that you have confidence in them.
