Dinner at Gidleigh Park, Devon

Driving from Chagford in Devon to Gidleigh Park is only a couple of miles but it seems to take an eon as you twist and turn your way, up, down and through the countryside lanes on a dark mid-winter?s night. Even the stars seemed to have abandoned us as we barely made out the passing winter hedgerows with only the moonlight to guide us. Seeing the Tudor-style country house hotel lit up before us as we turned into the driveway was a more than welcoming sight.  After pre-dinner drinks in the oak-panelled drawing room, with its large, comfortable sofas and open fireplace, we were ushered down the corridor to a busy full dining room to be served with a selection of amuse-bouche, including salmon and English sturgeon. Then, from the à la carte menu, a starter of mylor prawns, gnocchi, dashi, pumpkin and charcoal shallot rings were dished up.
