Even while the nation is in lockdown, there are many independent schools rising to the challenge of helping the less fortunate and more vulnerable members of their communities. Here?s our roundup?.
Eton College, Berkshire Â? free childcare and accommodation for keyworkers and online courses for state secondary schools
The £42,00 a year school has made the decision to stay open throughout the crisis ? including the Easter and summer holidays ? to teach children aged between five and 13 years whose parents are nurses, cleaners, porters, police and who work in other critical services.
The children from the surrounding areas of Maidenhead, Windsor and Slough will be able to use the swimming pool and tennis courts. The timetable will include drama, art, chess and film studies. The kitchens which usually provide meals for Eton?s 1,300 pupils will provide the children with meals and prepare food for those on free school meals locally.
The school is also planning to provide rooms for key workers in Berkshire who have family members who need to self-isolate at home. The four main hospitals in the area will be able to use the empty boarding houses and beds for staff who cannot go home.
All state secondary schools will be able to access courses, including verbal communication, public speaking and entrepreneurship via Eton?s online platform EtonX, which will be offered to schools nationally.
