Easter Chicks Hatch at Beechwood Park School

A clutch of baby chicks recently took residence in the science department at Beechwood Park School, St Albans
Easter is just around the corner (16th April), and in keeping with this theme, we couldn’t resist telling you about the adorable baby chicks that recently hatched at Beechwood Park School!
In early March, Beechwood Park’s science department became home to 10 fertilised eggs. These were supplied by Living Eggs, a company that works with schools across the UK and re-homes the chicks to a free-range farm once they’ve hatched.
Pupils and parents could observe the eggs (and chicks) from home by tuning into the live ‘chick cam’ set up on the school’s intranet. Once all 10 eggs had hatched ? producing nine girls and one boy ? the pupils paid them regular visits as part of their science lessons, learning about life processes, habitats, predators and food chains, animals’ needs and adaptation. Three Top Form (Year Eight) students contributed to their Leadership Through Service programmes by caring for the chicks each day, coming into school early to feed them and clean them out.
The science department also kept a diary, which they’ve been kind enough to share with us (with thanks to Beechwood Park School). Scroll down to see a video of the chicks.
