Polam School, a nearly 100-year-old pre-preparatory school in Bedford, was chosen as the winner of Pre-prep School of the Year at our Independent Schools of the Year awards 2021. Here’s how they won the title out of over 700 entrants.
Polam School is a small independent pre-prep and nursery for children aged 12 months to 7 years. Occupying two large Victorian houses on a leafy avenue in the heart of Bedford.

A strong focus on mental wellbeing
The school provides a unique home-from-home learning environment, where every child is known by every member of staff, with a distinct focus on pastoral care, mental health and wellbeing.
As part of the Cognita Schools group, Polam School regularly takes part in Cognita’s annual Global Be Well Day. From this we developed our own Week To Be Well, which then blossomed into dedicated wellbeing activities becoming part of the weekly timetable. With a Wellbeing Champion in School as well as a Mental Health First Aider, this is testament to our commitment to wellbeing all year round, reinforcing the importance of wellbeing as the foundation that needs to underpin every aspect of education.
