Westonbirt Senior School has been on a journey of improvement since becoming co-educational in 2019. Our objectives were to successfully transition to a co-ed establishment, grow numbers and improve educational experience. Pupils have increased from 180 girls in 2019 to 472 pupils in September 2022 (40% boys). We are not just a former girls’ school where a few boys attend; their presence is very evident as you walk around.
The infrastructure to support boys’ education has been developed and the scale of growth managed, despite the challenges of the pandemic. Being in a Grade 1 listed building has presented challenges, but we have adapted spaces and invested in development, opening new teaching spaces. Sport provision has expanded – rugby and cricket are now played and a new Sports Zone, including Astroturf pitch, has opened. Boys’ boarding was introduced in 2021, and in 2022 an off-site co-educational boarding house for Year 13s to help them prepare for university living or professional life opened.
