The benefits of a small school education

We speak to Paul Logan, joining as Head at Derby Grammar School in September, to find out what the benefits of a school school can be for children
Choosing the right school for your child is undoubtedly one of the most important choices you will face as a parent. The huge impact a school plays in such a crucial developmental time, shaping a person, has life-long implications. The fear of children being lost in a system that does not cater for them is a concern shared by most parents.
There is no doubt that school sizes across the UK continue to grow at pace. The average state-funded Primary School now has 282 pupils, and having increased by 43 pupils since 2009. Class sizes for infant age are generally 27 pupils. The average state-funded senior school has just less than a thousand pupils, sitting at 965 pupils. This has risen from 948 in 2018. Finding a small school is becoming rarer, but if you can access a small school, you?ll find bigger is not better. Paul Logan, joining as Head at Derby Grammar School in September, explains, ?Small single-stream schools are leading the way in tailored and flexible learning programs. In my experience they offer an environment that fosters empathy and positive wellbeing in a way that a large school never could. Small schools are more conducive to individual care, whilst still achieving excellent academic outcomes.?
A strong sense of connection can be seen whilst visiting Derby Grammar School, with different year groups mingling, teaching...
