The Private Schools opening their Gardens with the National Garden Scheme
The National Garden Scheme gives visitors access to over 3,500 beautiful and exotic private gardens in England and Wales, raising impressive amounts of money for nursing and health charities through admissions, plus teas and cake. Some of the UK?s esteemed independent schools with beautiful and educational gardens are taking part this summer
Here, we speak to the schools to find out about their gardens, what they hope to achieve with their National Garden Scheme partnership, those that have previously taken part, and what benefits gardening and being outdoors brings to pupils and young people.
Eton College, Berkshire
Visitors will have a rare chance to visit a group of central College gardens surrounded by historic school buildings, including Luxmoore?s garden. HE Luxmoore was a housemaster at the school for 50 years and created a garden on a small island in the Thames reached across two attractive bridges. This is also a gem of an opportunity to explore the fascinating Eton College Natural History Museum, the Museum of Eton Life and one or two other private gardens. A spokesman at the school says: ?We are proud to be able to say that our gardens at Eton College have been part of the National Garden Scheme for over 60 years and we are delighted to be participating again this year on Wednesday 3rd July from 12.00 to 4.30.
