A few years ago, my friends and I discovered the word ?hygge,? a Danish word that doesn?t have a true English equivalent.
It means that feeling of contentment that comes from enjoying life?s simple pleasures. It?s the happiness of friends sitting around a fire, the glow of candlelight, the warmth of a sip of rich hot cocoa.
Don?t you feel cozier just knowing that a word for that sensation exists" (In case you?re wondering, it?s pronounced ?hoogha,? but my friends and I say ?hig-gee? ? like Dutch Will Smith could sing ?Gettin? Higgy Wit? It.?)
Anyway, it's time to get lost, hygge. There?s a new word in town, and it?s perfect for my mom life.
Kalsarikannit.
Yeah, I don?t know how to say it either, but I think this is the pronunciation. It's a little bit like clearing your throat. This Finnish word doesn?t have an exact English equivalent ? apparently none of the good words do ? but it translates to drinking on the couch in your underwear with no intention of going out. And it makes me suspect I might actually be from Finland. Somebody 23andme me.
